2022.01.20 14:11 Sulai2 Help me understand the key argument in the .sort method
hey i'm new to programming :)
So i have this list of tuples list = [(2,"c"),(1,"b"),(3,"a")] if i want to sort the list by the second element of the tuples i can use: list = [(2,"c"),(1,"b"),(3,"a")]
letters = lambda x : x
list.sort(key = letters)
print(list) [(3, 'a'), (1, 'b'), (2, 'c')]
why does this works? it's just not intuitive to me. first: the letters function needs to have an argument and i'm calling it with no arguments second: how does x:x returns the index of the tuples?

2022.01.20 14:11 throwthisaway11112 Got hit by the kudos bot and I don't care
It's probably selfish in that I know that's not the only narrative, but it just doesn't bother me. I was already happy with the fic, so when it got hit very early on in the kudos bot debacle, I was a little excited but level-headed about it. This was before everyone knew what was happening. When I found out that a lot of those kudos were fake, it... didn't really change how I felt about the fic.
Now, unlike other people, the bot I was hit with was about 10-15 kudos a day for about a month. Much slower. Idk why. I know it was a bot because it started and stopped abruptly when people started talking about the kudos bot. I don't receive kudos in that way anymore. I started at around 400 kudos, and I'm at like 985 right now.
To contextualize, the subject matter of this fic is dark and only appeals to a subset of people. I know the people who read it are happy with it, including my friends, and that's what mattered to me. Would it have been different if the fic were less than a hundred kudos? Maybe. I'd like to think that what would have mattered is if my friends liked it, even if there were only a handful of them.
So yes, a lot of people sort by kudos, but I will say that if you're like me, you've already gobbled up all the highly kudos'd fic and at this point you're trawling most recently updated for content using tags you like. So at the end of the day, do kudos really make or break whether people find your fic? I'd argue no, but my fandom is also very interconnected, and people who write good fic get rec'd quickly and consistently. Maybe my privilege is being at least a decent writer who hits on popular tropes in a large fandom with a large ship and that's why I get kudos. Again though, I'm just pleased that my friends and people that I associate with like it. The kudos always were just an added bonus, but they were never the end-all-be-all. I'd encourage other authors to try and feel similarly if they can.
Try to enjoy your fic regardless of the interaction that you receive.
